CLEVELAND, Ohio –A fundraising dinner for Cleveland’s historic Italian Cultural Garden is Thursday, Sept. 4, at Dante Restaurant in Tremont. Established in 1930, the garden is part of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Money raised will be used for renovations to preserve and enhance its cultural significance.
Recent restoration work, totaling $63,000, included the installation of seven black granite medallions surrounding the main fountain, commemorating Italian luminaries Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Galileo, Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio, sculptors Donatello and Bernini, and the Roman-era poet Ovidio.
The fundraiser will help pay for next phase of the project — restoring the large Renaissance fountain that is the centerpiece of the upper plaza. The fountain is modeled after one in Rome’s Villa Medici. Renovation is estimated at $35,000.
The most ambitious component of the restoration plan is yet to come. It includes building a Pantheon structure, originally conceived in the 1930s but never completed. This addition, projected to cost $450,000, will honor 100 notable Italian men and women from Roman times through the Renaissance to the present. The central statue will be Galileo, whom Einstein dubbed “the Father of Modern Science.”
