SIG has announced that its SIG Terra RecShield BD bag-in-box package for wine, featuring the SIG Terra FlexTap, has received APR Design for Recyclability Recognition from the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR).
The recognition confirms that the packaging meets the highest recyclability criteria outlined in the APR Design Guide for Plastics Recyclability and marks the first time a wine packaging solution from SIG has achieved this certification, SIG said in a news release.
According to SIG, the achievement underscores its commitment to advancing recycle-ready packaging across diverse beverage categories.
Previous recognitions in its Terra portfolio include SIG Terra RecShield PE-42B for water, awarded in 2021, and SIG Terra RecShield D for post-mix syrup, recognised earlier this year.
The newly certified wine packaging is designed with a high-performance laminate that was validated through APR’s Critical Guidance Protocol (FPE-CG-01 Path 1A), the most stringent pathway for establishing recyclability in North America.
“Wine brings unique packaging challenges, particularly when it comes to balancing oxygen barrier, ease of dispensing, and robustness throughout conversion, filling, and distribution with recyclability,” said Teresa Bernal-Lara, PhD, global head of Film Development, Bag-in-Box and Spouted Pouch at SIG.
“With SIG Terra RecShield BD, we’ve developed a recycle-ready laminate that performs under the rigorous demands of wine distribution and preservation. Through market-leading packaging engineering, we’ve enabled this complex bag-in-box to be reprocessed into new materials – demonstrating that even highly functional barrier packaging can be circular by design.”
Jami Leveen, head of Sustainability at SIG North America, said the recognition demonstrates that sustainability and performance can go hand in hand.
“Reaching this milestone shows we can prioritise sustainability and circularity while also providing excellent product protection, quality, and reliability. This peace of mind helps customers fulfill their corporate responsibility goals while also providing the best possible consumer experience,” she said.
SIG said the recognition reinforces its mission to simplify packaging structures, reduce waste, and support decarbonisation in the global food and beverage supply chain.
