Pets in Grow a Garden are so much more than mere decorations, or even companions: they are invaluable helpers when it comes to the upkeep of your plot, particularly when it comes to improving your crops. Just having a pet nearby can proc a passive skill that interacts with nearby fruits in interesting and beneficial ways.
As your pets age, you might consider adding a mutation to them: a permanent upgrade that permanently enhances their skills, or even grants a brand-new and more powerful trait in addition to their innate ability. To learn how this works, see below for our list of all pet mutations in Grow a Garden and how to get them – including those exclusively found in the Cooking Update event.

How to obtain and apply pet mutations in Grow a Garden
Pet mutations in Grow a Garden are obtained and applied quite differently, depending on whether they are a permanent part of the game or only available in a limited-time event.
The permanently available pet mutations in the game can only be applied to a pet that has reached the age of 50. If you have a pet that’s reached this venerable age and don’t mind altering it permanently, you can interact with the Mutation Station near the Pet Egg stall while holding your pet. You must then pay 500,000,000 Sheckles and wait one real-time hour, at which point your pet’s age will be reset to one, and they’ll have gained a random permanent mutation trait (probabilities can be viewed on the table further up this page).
The second way to mutate a pet is by applying a Pet Mutation Shard directly to the pet you want to mutate. Pet Mutation Shards are random reward drops from limited-time events, and apply special event-themed mutations that aren’t available via regular gameplay. They have a couple of benefits over the permanent mutations: shards are unique to the mutation they apply, so you’ll know exactly what you’re getting; and they are applied instantly, so you don’t have to wait an hour to see the benefits.
Once the mutation process has been started it can’t be cancelled or reversed. Furthermore, mutations don’t stack (with the rare exception of pets who hatch with an innate mutation), and applying a new mutation will overwrite any existing one. In other words, be absolutely sure you want to mutate this particular pet before you begin!
