LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Big E’s BBQ has been part of Lubbock’s late-night food scene in the Depot District for more than 20 years.

The business was founded by Ferlis Ellis Jr., a Houston native, Texas Tech football player, and first-generation college graduate.

He started selling barbecue from a small trailer in an alley, eventually building a well-known spot serving brisket, chicken, shrimp, and more until 3 a.m.

Ellis Jr., died on Aug. 2 at the age of 61, months after being diagnosed with a brain tumor in November. His son, Ferlis Ellis III, is now running the business with the help of his father’s longtime friend.

“You know, I’m not my pops but I want to live up to be the man he can be and create those same stories myself,” Ellis III said.

Ellis III said he grew up working alongside his dad and is committed to keeping it open.

Customers have shown their support, with some returning to share memories and bring their own children to the restaurant.

“To the people who may have any concerns or doubts, Big E’s BBQ isn’t going no where; we’re going to be here forever.”

Big E’s BBQ is open Thursday through Sunday from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m.

“God willing, another 23 years, I got big intentions, expanding the menu. Man, it’s going to be exciting,” Ellis III said.
