At Monday’s meeting, Golden K chairperson Bill Roberts introduces guest speaker Chris Spence, food ministries coordinator at Grace Methodist Church in Norway.

KINGSFORD — Change is in the air as summer approaches its twilight. A quietness has entered the aura of the community, although it definitely has not affected the traffic. That is still as busy as ever, but it seems that people have calmed some.

Summer programs and events are winding down and daily life is focusing on the school year ahead. Parents, students and teachers are getting schedules together. The world of leisure is about to change. Changes happen in all walks of life; however, the Golden K seniors look forward to their regular Monday mornings. It’s not just the coffee and doughnuts, it is the getting together and sharing stories of weekend activities and family gatherings.

Music makes everything better, so a bit of that was added into the Monday meeting. Alyce Derwinski was on piano, with Lois Outcelt at her side ready to lead the group. The classics rang out with a chorus of voices unmatched anywhere. You have to be there to appreciate the gusto and enthusiasm.

Welcome was sung for guest speaker Chris Spence. Happy Birthday goes to Dave Sielaff and Happy Anniversary was sung for John and Diane Aune.

The 50-50 drawing was won by Chris Spence, who happened to be today’s guest speaker. Spence, food ministries coordinator at Grace Methodist Church in Norway, brought the group up to date on the Feeding America program and activity in local food pantries.

Feeding America is a nationwide, monumental program. Local communities across the country facilitate food pantries, soup kitchens and community meals. Untold numbers of volunteers service these programs.

Donations of food, meats, produce and supplies to help those in need are always in demand. Grocery stores, as well as individuals, come forward with appreciated donations.

Churches and community centers open areas for food distribution. You’ll find people helping people by filling bags of essentials for neighbors, friends and strangers.

Grants and donations also help to buy extra food supplies.

Food stamps are helpful but sometimes run dry before the month ends.

The Norway Crossroads Alliance churches work together stocking, packing and distributing food for people who find themselves in need.

Distributions are every other month, with the next event scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2.

Volunteers play a huge part in packing and distribution. Help is always appreciated.

The community is blessed by several programs, which provide food, kids’ lunch programs and community meals.

Spence has an immense passion for this service and devotes hours preparing, planning and executing.

Food programs are essential to those who find their cupboard empty. This is especially important for families feeding children. The benefits from these programs are immeasurable. Those who volunteer time to help distribute bags are welcomed and commended.

Donations of time, money and food are always welcome. For more information on Feeding America, go to FeedAmerica.org.

Golden K will meet at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford, with a program about children’s advocacy. All are welcome.
