First time canning pears. Is it normal for a little fruit to float above the syrup line. I left 1/4 inch head space as instructed by the Ball Book of Canning and Preserving, but the level seems a little lower now and some of the fruit sticks up.

Totally normal. Fruit cell walls are full of air. They’ll settle in eventually. Worst case, anything “above the line” may discolor or oxidize, but it’s just unsightly/aesthetics and has nothing to do with safety.
