The product was located in the hypoallergenic section of the store, next to many other vegan cookies, brownies, and other baked items.

On the label, it advertised itself as being free from many common allergens, as well as a bright green label that reads “plant based” on the top. I ended up checking the label just to be sure, and it was in fact not vegan. Could you see yourself being fooled by this?

I suppose I just found it extremely strange that the packaging was being advertised as “plant based compostable” right next to the gluten free certification.

  1. It says “compostabable” and “packaging”, so no, I dont find that confusing or misleading.

I think the packaging is plant based-whatever that means. Very deceptive

  3. ashtree35

Not really. It’s pretty clear that it’s talking about the packaging since it’s in a small font right above the word “compostable” in a larger font.

Also it’s on the complete opposite side of the packaging from the gluten free certification, not right next to it.

There’s nothing wrong with advertising compostable packaging, it’s important

  5. DazzlingPoint6437

Yeah, a quick read, you see plant based. Upon closer inspection, it’s the packaging that’s plant based, not the product. It’s actually hilarious! I always read the ingredient list very carefully regardless of the packaging.

  6. SnooEagles6329

It doesn’t say it’s vegan. It says dairy free.

  7. wildclouds

Nothing about the packaging suggests it would be egg-free. It says “plant based packaging (compostable)”. If it were vegan they’d definitely advertise it as such because it’s a selling point.

Anyone with food allergies should be reading ingredients lists, not just glancing at front labels and trusting the graphic design choices.

That’s not vegan, it doesn’t say so. It also has egg whites in the brownie which is literally in the picture

  9. Well, it’s got egg whites so that tells me it’s not for me.

    Dude

Any time something says dairy free read the fine print

It’s also a processed packaged food so technically not wfpb

  11. Healthy-Neat-2989

Plant based packaging doesn’t make me think it’s vegan. 🤷🏻‍♀️

  12. StillYalun

Yeah. The really messed up thing is that they could have done this cheaper without eggs and it would be at least as tasty. They literally have the flax already there.

(I may be biased because I hate both the taste and the idea of eggs)

  13. Such_Temperature6389

Just because it’s say it’s plant-based doesn’t mean everything in it is 100% plants. Not required to.

  14. Liverne_and_Shirley

Hmm not really. If it was vegan it would say that where it says dairy, gluten, and nut free in large letters.

The words “plant based” and “packaging” are in the same font on and behind the word “compostable”, on what they made to look like a stamp or seal, so those 3 words go together.

    I agree!
I work in advertising and occasionally work on food packaging designs and I would 100% flag this as deceptive. The compostable badge looks like an ingredients call-out, especially, as you’ve noted, when it shares hierarchical importance with the gluten free badge.
It may not be intentionally deceptive, but I think someone should’ve pointed this out (and it’s very possible that someone did, and the people in charge didn’t listen.)

  16. misskinky

confusing but it means the PACKAGING is plant based, lol

  17. Neat-Celebration-807

In the US manufacturers can pretty much slap almost whatever they want on the front of a package. Therefore never believe what you see on the front! Always read ingredients and allergens list.

  18. cohete_rojo

I mean if you’re eating the box as a side, then you got beef…otherwise you just can’t read.

  19. TheSpanishMystic

That’s why you always read the ingredients!! Companies will mislead customers as much as they can legally get away with to sell products

  20. Wise-Hamster-288

this does not in any way look like a wfpb product. most of the ingredients are refined.

  21. curlyquinn02

Plant based packaging doesn’t mean that the product is plant based too. Unless you want to eat the packaging.

I see no dairy or nuts. (Unsure about gluten because I don’t have to worry about that)

  22. ReplicantOwl

Your lack of comprehension is not deception on their part

  23. One_Bat8206

So many things wrong with your take. Vegan and plant based are not the same thing. Secondly, it says plant based packaging. It never claimed that the ingredients would be plant based. Even if eggs are an ingredient, the food would still be plant-based if the main ingredients are plant derived. I don’t see any signs of dairy, gluten, or nuts like the packaging claimed, so not sure why you would bring up allergens like they did something wrong. Sounds like you were already looking to pick a fight with the food industry. Learn how to read first before coming here with these dumb observations.
