Eager viewers even contributed their own tips, like Shane who suggested: “I seen a tip where someone used a potato peeler to cut onions. use a fork to hold the onion and slice top to bottom.”
For a laid-back culinary adventure this autumn, gather the ingredients for Nathan’s fuss-free French onion soup.
Slow Cooker French Onion Soup
Ingredients
10-15 onions, sliced (roughly 1.5kg)100g butterOne tsp Italian herbsFresh thyme900ml beef stock200ml white wineOne bay leafSaltPepperTwo-three garlic clovesTwo tbsp brown sugarOne tbsp Worcestershire sauceTwo handfuls of cheeseSix bread slices
Method
Begin by slicing all the onions and placing them in the slow cooker. Add all ingredients to the slow cooker, excluding the stock, cheese and bread.
Set the cooker on high and let it cook for eight to ten hours. Nathan suggests that if you’re looking to speed up the process, pre-soften the onion in a frying pan before adding it to the slow cooker.
After cooking, remove the herbs and pour in the beef stock, then top with sliced bread and cheese. Don’t forget to butter the bread.
Next, place it under the grill for eight minutes. Once the bread is toasted and the cheese has melted, take it out from under the grill.
Serve and savour!
