Why hasn’t everything been spicy all along?

  2. Unfortunately it isn’t. My wife is always excited to have me try the new “spicy” chip/taco/burrito and it isn’t. I would be happy if it was just Valentina Black levels of heat, something like Torchbearer or anything from Pepper X and I would be in heaven (and hurting!).

Currently I make wraps using the spicy chicken breasts from Walmart with the reaper cheese. Keeps me happy.

I can save people some time:

People like spicy food. Its good.

  4. AlfhildsShieldmaiden

They finally realized that a lot of people want spicy! 🌶️

  5. Shirowoh

I’m shocked she got paid to write this, this is literally rambling about nothing. Is journalism dead?

  6. It’s…not. I realize they’re probably referring to the glut of products labeled “spicy” lately, but while it’s more than it used to be, it’s still a tiny fraction of food products that even have a “spicy” labeled option now.

(The “probably” is because I don’t give click revenue to these kinds of “We just noticed what everyone else did a decade ago and we’re going to phrase it as if it’s strange!” shitposts posing as news articles.)

We are all dead inside and want to feel something

Everything is spicy now? I honestly haven’t noticed.

  9. Mrchickenonabun

More like everything is just claiming to be spicy now even if it’s really not

  10. Making things spicy has very few calories and protein + low calorie is now trending so it makes sense.

  11. BackgroundPrompt3111

Nothing is spicy anymore, don’t know what you’re talking about

  12. This article is so dramatic. No, not everything is spicy now. “Carolina Reaper Pepper” is almost a marketing term at this point. Like 90 percent of the foods that have it contain so little that it’s barely on par with jalapeño spice level.

Easy answer: The massive proliferation of online content featuring people eating/enduring massively spicy food. I’ve been a spice-head for as long as I can remember, but stuff like Hot-Ones had opened my eyes to a world of spice I could never have imagined.
Everyone wants to incinerate themselves now.

Why was this published?? I’m just happy I can go into a grocery store and usually find at least a single product that is “spicy” to me. 10, 15, 20 years ago it wasn’t like that, and I live in an area with a large population that makes very spicy food. Everything isn’t spicy these days, but spicy food is much more accessible. I’ll still go to a Mexican grocery store, as that’s still the best way to find great stuff locally, but it’s really nice to not always have to make a special trip to get my spicy fix.

As for things getting spicier… it’s pretty natural for the human species to keep pushing and pushing the envelope, so it shouldn’t be too surprising to anybody that we’d push it with our food as well

  15. InstantAcceptance

If anything, most things aren’t spicy enough.

The world is waking up to the delicious burn

Same reason everything is about to be Pumpkin Spice. The Man. You see any time there is something cool or new or awesome The Man tries to ruin it. Thankfully spice cannot be defeated. So we have that.

It’ll die off, just like the bacon craze a decade and a half ago.

  19. No_Shame_Burger

The tickling pleasure it procures when it goes in and out of your system. I’ll let people settle on which one they prefer.

  20. burgonies

Alton Brown hypothesized 20 years ago that it was because boomers were getting older and their sense of taste was fading

  21. Informal_Drawing

    Nothing is spicy.

Even food labelled “very, very hot” is vaguely medium at best.

  22. Cheese_Wheelies

I live in Maine, USA, where a smidge of black pepper is “spicy”

  23. Latter-Ad-4369

Cause it’s good spice is good hot shit is good 😊

This is like people complaining about vegetarian/vegan options becoming more available. Why does someone even care that people who enjoy it have more options when it’s not something they would be interested in? 😭

  26. NinjaStiz

Because heat is the spice of life. Some of us knew it before everyone else did is all

  27. NinjaStiz

Is this all it takes to be a mainstream journalist now?

  28. MrAflac9916

I like spicy food when you can actually have proper pepper flavor and the spice is a compliment to everything else… I feel like a lot of people just eat spice to show off or just for the heat… And I’m not about that

  29. BlackMoth27

with how hot peppers are these days, it’s crazy so many products manage to be medium or mild in heat while claiming to be extremely spicy.

  30. food literally taste bland to me now if it isn’t spicy.

  31. Brandon_Me

I don’t think it is. When I order spicy at a restaurant it’s typically not very spicy.

  32. Dancingbeavers

Habaneros were thought to be the hottest?

  33. KnightofWhen

Didn’t click on it, but I read once that as the population gets older our taste buds decline in their ability so we opt for spicier foods to be able to taste more.

  34. beliefinphilosophy

Because we ran out of bacon and truffle oil

  35. BucketsofSputum

Why does everything have seasoning now? Why isn’t food all boiled now? Why can I taste the difference between broccoli and brussels sprouts now?

  36. Diagonaldog

Everything is “spicy” in name only. I wish everything that claimed to be spicy actually was.
