After a year and a half in Danville, Isola Osteria is closing its doors.

The Sicilian restaurant was opened last February by Agrodolce’s Angelo D’Alo and has received mostly positive reviews online, but D’Alo announced the restaurant will be serving its last meal on Saturday, Aug. 30, due to “serious health challenges” in the family.

“After much reflection, we’ve come to realize that the most important thing we can do right now is to step away and focus fully on spending time together,” D’Alo wrote in a goodbye letter. “Family has always been at the heart of everything we do—our food, our traditions, and the love we pour into every dish. Now, we must live out that same spirit by being present for the moments that matter most.”

D’Alo described the restaurant as an extension of his southern Italian heritage and a love letter to his mother, Rosa, who is from Palermo.

D’Alo and his family also opened Angrodolce in 2016 and will continue to keep the Berkeley restaurant open. The D’Alo family had previously operated Elmwood’s Trattoria La Siciliana for 23 years before it closed during the pandemic in 2020.

D’Alo is encouraging all Isola customers to come have one least meal in Danville before he closes the doors.

“This has not been an easy decision,” he said. “For the last year and a half, this little place has been more than a restaurant—it’s been an extension of our home, our culture, and our family. Many of you have become more than guests; you’ve become part of our story.”

For anybody with a gift certificate that can’t be used before Isola closes on Aug. 30, D’Alo recommends calling or texting 510-912-1231 to find a solution.
