CHETEK (WQOW) – A Western Wisconsin ice cream shop is getting recognition after competing in a national competition.
“Our motto is Wisconsin ice cream at it’s best,” said Owner Alan Kurschner.
Kurschner’s Super Premium Ice Cream is located along the main drag of Chetek. It’s an little, ordinary shop that is winning some big, extraordinary awards.
Kurschner’s won the Ice Cream Grand Championship at the World Dairy Expo.
“It’s the largest dairy convention in the world and I know they have an ice cream contest and so I thought I’d submit about 10 of my flavors and hopefully maybe place in one of them,” Alan explained.
In one fell scoop he placed fourth for Pistachio, second for Lemon Poppyseed, and first in the hardest category: Vanilla.
“I did a blend of Madagascar and Indonesian blend,” Alan said.
But then, he was given more sweet information.
“The lady said ‘We have more good news for you, you won first place in the category of peanut butter/chocolate’ and I was just completely thrilled,” recalled Alan.
To be named the a ‘Grand Champion’ judges chose the best overall ice cream flavor from any form. That includes sherbet, frozen yogurt and gelato. To Alan’s surprise his Peanut Butter Chocolate ice cream was the winner.
“We’re competing with ice cream makers from New York City to California all the ones that participated in the Midwest and Wisconsin so this is truly and honor,” he said.
Adding to the sweet feat, Kurschner’s has been open for less than a year. They also make all their ice cream on location with Alan responsible for sprinkling in creativity for each flavor. They are the only ice cream shop in the Badger State that has never used artificial dyes, giving each spoonful a rich and filling flavor.
Moving forward, Alan isn’t planning to expand and sell his ice cream wholesale. Instead he wants to keep it local where people can stop in, grab a scoop or a cone and enjoy his famous desserts.
“We’re putting ice cream, at least Barron County and Chetek, on the ice cream map,” he said.
Alan will head to Madison next month to be receive his awards. In the meantime he’ll keep developing new flavors for everyone to enjoy. You can learn more about Kurschner’s here.
