Got a chirashi bowl from Hmart yesterday for lunch on the go. It was overall pretty good but I was not a fan of this dark, almost brown fish in the upper left of the bowl. It kinda spoiled my appetite 🙃 my taste for seafood is weird since I got covid, but this one was just really rough for some reason. Honestly, I had to force it down because I ain’t spitting out food in this economy lol
I’d like to identify it so I can avoid in the future. Thanks!

Looks like some extremely oxidized tuna.

Probably just marinated tuna, doesn’t mean it’s really old and oxidized. Sometimes they will do a soy based marinade similar to poke

Yikes, I hope you’re doing well today, bc that looks like tuna that’s gone bad

If it tastes a bit salty and sweet, it’s probably just marinated tuna. I sometimes do that using soy and mirin.

  5. Soy marinated tuna. Yellowfin or something like that.

Is this HMart in Aurora Colorado? I had the weirdest experience there yesterday with two separate employees who worked at that food area where the sushi was. Long story short I think the employees there or at least in that section of the store are working under abusive management.

if they call it poke it’s a big maybe, if it says chirashi on the lable I’d just turn around and walk. I don’t think Hmart is that bad, and that does look like marinated tuna, however, several years of working behind the sushi bar makes me wonder, why is it done to the tuna? what condition was it in before being marinated?

Looks like Bonito. Most of the west see this as Trash Fish. The Japanese dry it and shave it and put it on things like Okonomiyaki or Takkoyaki

Marinated lean tuna but it looks old. I would not eat that.
