First things first, French tacos are not tacos. That is to say, they are nothing like the traditional Mexican tacos that Angelenos know and love. French tacos are a mix between a panini, a kebab, and a burrito. It’s beloved late-night fast food from France, and now, it’s landed in L.A.

But will this cultural mashup of fast food be able to win over the hearts and stomachs of taco-loving Angelenos?

Where do French tacos come from?

French tacos don’t actually come from Mexico. They were invented in France in the early 2000s, most likely in the region of Lyon. Created by North African immigrants to France, they blend French fast-food culture with influences from Mexican-style tortillas and Middle Eastern street food.

What are French tacos?

French tacos typically consist of a large flour tortilla loaded with shawarma meat, fries, cheese sauce, and other fresh fillings. Folded into a neat square and grilled to perfection, it is a hearty, customizable, and easily accessible meal that makes it the perfect late-night treat after a long night out. Over the last few years, French tacos have quickly won over hungry young people across France and into the rest of Europe.

Another interesting tidbit – they’re always called “French tacos,” even if you’re only eating just one.
