Remember on the Sopranos when Bobby Baccalieri saved the last Ziti that his late wife Karen made in his freezer long after she had passed? I did the same thing to a box of ravioli from a legendary Waterbury restaurant that closed down over two years ago.
In late August of 2023, I learned that Grotto Restaurant and Mrs. G. on Watertown Avenue in Waterbury had made the difficult decision to shut down permanently. It wasn’t a flashy or trendy restaurant, Grotto served up basic versions of Italian comfort food, but they were consistent. I never had a bad meal at that place.
I Finally Gave In and Ate a Piece of Waterbury Restaurant History
The Grotto Restaurant was a simple Italian food institution on Waterbury’s Watertown Avenue for most of my life until it permanently closed 2 years ago in the Summer of 2023. I had a package of frozen ravioli from the Grotto in my freezer for the past two years, it’s finally time to say goodbye to the last piece of pasta I’ve held on to for so long. Join me.
