On Aug. 5, Los Angeles magazine Best of L.A. restaurants Orla by Michael Mina and Ladyhawk will present a collaborative dinner.
The one-night-only dining experience showcases the expansive versatility of Mediterranean flavors, highlighting both Ladyhawk’s Levantine-inspired fare and Orla’s coastal-forward menu.
The five courses come curated by chefs Michael Mina and Charbel Hayek, who teamed to craft a menu inclusive of labneh tartlets with sun gold tomato and za’atar; kataifi-wrapped prawns with spicy mango and hawaij-spiced American Wagyu strip steak with matbucha and smashed yams. Ending on a sweet note, the evening will conclude with a special dessert.
“For me, food brings people together,” Hayek told Los Angeles in January for its Best New Restaurants list. “I wanted to have dishes from everywhere — we wanted to be Eastern Mediterranean.”
He added, “Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, Syria, it’s a very similar cuisine. But each country does it a little bit differently… we were able to mix the region in a very beautiful way.”
As for Mina’s restaurant at the Regent Santa Monica Beach, he shared, “The goal was to go back to Egypt.”
Ultimately, the Aug. 5 dinner will evoke Mediterranean food’s communal nature. “It’s a very fun cuisine,” Hayek said. “You get together and you enjoy a bunch of dishes at the same time.”
