Founder and owner Isabella Pang’s Japanese cafe offers what it calls a “five-shade tasting experience” of its matcha gelatos. The flight features increasingly stronger levels of the green tea, from one (mild) to five (bold and ceremonial grade). There’s also lattes (matcha, hojicha, black sesame), coffees, soft serves, parfaits, cakes, mille crepes, and more.

Nine Orchard’s got new owners

Sundburg spoke to MML co-founder and partner Larry McGuire, who had said the team wasn’t aiming to run anything in New York City, but they had heard about this sale and decided to explore it. The team doesn’t have solidified plans as to what they’ll do with the property, and it would take a year for any potential changes to happen. (The business also just acquired a longtime Austin beer garden/restaurant/bakery mini-chain, too.)

New straight-from-Italy cafe opening alert

A new Italian cafe, bakery, and restaurant straight from Tuscany is going to be making its U.S. debut this fall. La Tazza D’Oro will be opening in Union Square at 220 Park Avenue South at East 18th Street on Monday, September 8.

La Tazza D’Oro — which has operated in Prato, Italy since 1984 — is expanding into America courtesy of LDV Hospitality (which runs Scarpetta and American Cut). The cafe will serve coffee (including its capolavoro macchiato), cremino (custard-filled pastries), wood-fired pizza, pasta, salads, spritzes, and wines for dine-in and takeout.

A Miami chef’s Nikkei seafood dinner

East Village seafood restaurant Penny hosts chef Nando Chang of Miami restaurant Itamae AO for dinner tonight, Tuesday, August 26. The a la carte menu will feature Nikkei dishes (Japanese Peruvian). Reservations can be booked online, and there is room for walk-ins.
