If you keep a reserve of frozen pizzas in your freezer, you might want to check your stash. According to a recent notice from the United States Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the agency has issued a health alert for a frozen, not-ready-to-eat uncured pepperoni pizza sold at Trader Joe’s. The health alert was issued because the frozen pizza, which was imported from Italy, did not receive the benefit of import re-inspection. A recall wasn’t issued because the product is no longer available for purchase.
Still, the FSIS cautions that the item—Trader Joe’s Uncured Pepperoni Pizza—may still be in consumers’ freezers. The frozen pizzas bear the Italy establishment number “IT 1558 L UE” printed inside the Italian mark of inspection located on the front of the package. Additionally, the pizzas were sold in 17.63-oz. cardboard box packages labeled “TRADER JOE’S UNCURED PEPPERONI PIZZA PRODUCT OF ITALY” with “MFG LOT: 06/16/25 BEST BY: 08/16/26” or “MFG LOT: 06/21/25 BEST BY 08/21/26” printed on the bottom of the package.
Per the FSIS, the frozen pizzas were shipped to Trader Joe’s locations in California. Trader Joe’s has more than 150 stores in California—the most of any state—including outposts in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Simi Valley.
According to the FSIS, the problem was discovered when Trader Joe’s notified the agency that the uncured pepperoni pizzas were not presented for FSIS import re-inspection. Still, the FSIS notes that there have been no confirmed reports of illness or adverse reactions due to consumption of the pizzas. Consumers concerned about an illness or reaction should contact a healthcare provider if needed.
Shoppers who have purchased these frozen pizzas are urged not to consume them. Instead, the pizzas should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase. Consumers with questions about this health alert can contact Trader Joe’s Customer Relations at 626-599-3817.
