I actually went to the store in search of a different brand of peanut butter ice cream, but they were sold out. I've heard many great things about McConnell's, and felt this would be the perfect time to give them a shot! Found at Safeway in CA.

I attached pictures of the front of the pint, the flavor description, 2 shots of the actual ice cream, and finally the ingredients.

I'm just going to say it upfront: this ice cream was incredibly salty. It was apparent from the very first bite. The flavor name should be listed as "SALTED double peanut butter chip". Thankfully peanut butter and chocolate both work well with the addition of salt, but to me it felt like overkill.

It was hard to taste the quality of the base because of the abundance of mix-ins. I did notice that the overall texture was a little icy, but that could always be the fault of the store instead of the brand. The mix-ins were very small, but very plentiful. You couldn't get a bite without small bits of chocolate or peanut butter even if you tried (which is far from a bad thing, as someone who appreciates a good mix-in).

The peanut butter bits did have a real, natural peanutty taste. The texture was even a little bit gritty, but not in a sandy way. They had the same texture as natural peanut butter out of a jar.

The chocolate came in the form of very thin and small shards, not chips or chunks. It added a nice snappy texture to every bite, but the taste was a bit more faint because of it. It lived up to the description of bittersweet chocolate, it tasted real and natural like the peanut butter. Not very sweet or milky.

I did appreciate the quantity and quality of the mix-ins, but unfortunately they were no match for the overwhelming salt profile. Perhaps if the base had more sweetness, it could have been balanced.

The base was super salty, the peanut butter was more salty than sweet, and the chocolate was bittersweet. That was the glaring issue for me with this ice cream. I even had my bf taste it to make sure I wasn't biased (because I do have a serious sweet tooth) and he agreed the salt was far too powerful. I will probably finish this pint slowly over a period of time because I do love peanut butter, but I would not purchase this again.

I will say that if you find most ice creams to be too sweet, this could be the perfect option for you! I still want to try McConnell's chocolate covered strawberry, because I've heard great things about that flavor. Hopefully they will redeem themselves for me with that in the future.

I personally love this flavor!! I really like salty ice creams though.

I didn’t care for the Chocolate Covered Strawberry flavor at all (didn’t even finish it) but loved their Strawberry Creams flavor they did with See’s. Not sure if it was just a bad pint I got but there was like no strawberry flavor.

Just be certain NOT to try their Sea Salt & Cookie flavor, it’s got 33% more salt than the PB. Twice the salt of the average potato chips!

Some of the very best ice cream I’ve ever had. Not too sweet. The peanut butter and chocolate shards provide excellent texture. The dairy flavor shines through. Love this stuff.

I feel like it’s more savory than salty.

Great review. They do have pretty salty bases so totally get why it wasn’t a win for you.

Very detailed and fair review to paint the pictures for others 🫡

I found the texture to be gritty as well and couldn’t get past that. Flavor was pretty good but this is not the type of texture I enjoy… disappointing 😕

If you would like to try a better version that is a little less salty, may I recommend Jeni’s Salted Peanut Butter With Chocolate Flecks to you? It has a good roasted peanut flavor, and the hint of chocolate is a nice contrast that adds a little sweetness and helps counteract some of the saltiness. My husband likes it as a pint choice after he’s finished a previous pint of something far sweeter like S’mores Ice Cream or Ben & Jerry’s Karamel Sutra.

Wasn’t a fan. Had too much addins. Like every bite has chocolate chips in it. Which if you like you like, but I prefer more balance
