Some folks really enjoyed the recipe that called for “25 cents of beans – use half” in chili so I thought this one would also be pretty funny.
This was included in a little handmade recipe book that I’m gonna try to get posted up this weekend!

#Meatloaf (1929)
15¢ ground beef
5¢ sausage
Onion, salt, pepper
½ c milk
1 egg
1½ c bread crumbs
Flora Parter
Hmm…
Best I can find is 1935, where beef was $0.25 for two pounds, so I’m guessing one pound of beef.
Can’t seem to find anything for sausage specifically, but since it’s 1/3 the cost of beef I’ll guess 1/3 pound, maybe as much as 1/2 if sausage was cheaper than beef.
Interesting, I’ve never used milk in meatloaf.
They really kept track of amounts using money? I figured it was shorthand for ounces or something.
Imagine living in 1929 thinking prices would remain stable enough to use in a recipe.
I think I need to start adding sausage to my meatloaf.
This is basically how my Mom made it, except she also added some diced green bell pepper to it.
