He claims the oils from the ginger mixes with soy sauce and he loves it. I'm not a fan of ginger. But is this a thing that people do? Or did my friend invent something new? Lol

  1. Wow the ginger is supposed to be a pallet cleanser.

Is this fresh ginger or pickled ginger? Also neither really have oil, its juice is mainly water based.

I don’t go to this length but I absolutely dip pickled ginger in my soy sauce. Or the eel sauce or the spicy mayo. Sometimes all 3. It’s so good. I also ask for an entire bowl of the ginger all for just myself.

I’ve seen sushi chefs take a slice of ginger, dip it in soy sauce, and then use it to paint the soy on a piece of fish. I have never seen what your friend is doing.

I could never eat that much soy at one time

  6. I do that. Dont really shred it up tho. I eat kt wirh the fish. Fucking looooove it that way.

This is a little wild but atleast it’s not just sitting on the plate going to waste…?

I do the classic small dips into soy sauce, put a dot of wasabi pieces, and between different types cleanse with ginger. This is not for me but if you like it go for it.

  9. In sushi it’s not as much a thing but in Chinese restaurants, it is sometimes a thing. Especially those dim sum (dumpling) places. Though it’s usually raw ginger in a vinegar soy mixture rather than pickled ginger in soy sauce.

Buddy of mine mixes wasabi into his soy sauce but I’ve never heard of someone doing that with the ginger

I don’t shred my ginger but I do save it until the very end after my sushi is gone and dip it into my left over soy sauce then enjoy.

I put the ginger and wasabi in my soy sauce and mix it all up for dipping sometimes. Only with super cheap sushi though lol

I do this then I take wasabi and mash it into the sauce and make spicy sweet spy sauce. Or you just take the shredded bits and put it on the sushi and it’s super tasty

I thought my GF eating ginger for sustenance was bad

  15. TinyChocolate6089

lol I know it’s supposed to be a palette cleanser but I like to dip it in soy sauce and eat it. Mashing it in there like that is a little…. Excessive

I take half a teaspoon of wasabi and mix it in the soy then add 3-4 strips of the ginger and poke it with the chopsticks to release the flavor. I know it’s a crime but it’s a yummy crime.

Fairly common for dim sum, specifically Xiao long bao

I will do this on occasion. I have a friend who does it just like your friend. Depending on the roll, I may add a slice to it. Usually, I just wait till I’m done and then eat the whole pile of ginger.

  19. My Japanese friend taught me to do this with wasabi but I’ve never seen it with ginger. If he likes it tho leave him be. We all have food things we like that others would think are a bit out there.

  20. mattmojo2

I do this with wasabi… Not a fan of the ginger though

  21. Historical_Row_8481

At least he doesn’t shred them with his fingers

  22. Which-Pineapple-6790

I doubt anyone would yell at em for it. Someone I’ve had sushi with likes taking the wasabi and stirring it into the soy sauce. IMO the best way is a small ball of wasabi on top of the sushi piece, dipped lightly in soy sauce, and ginger between pieces to cleanse the pallet. Also love having sake with the meal

  23. PigletEqual3066

I do similar, “thanks” for outting us. I don’t shred the ginger, but I put it in the soy sauce along with the wasabi. Then I lay one leaf atop my sushi roll. I just like ginger. Beef bowls and curry too, I throw in extra ginger.

  24. noiness420

I like to mix the wasabi in with my soy sauce

  25. MarekRules

I’ve been told to put ginger mixed with vinegar and soy sauce as like a dip for dumplings but never for sushi.

In Hawaii we take fresh ginger grate in shoyu and use that to dip oxtail from oxtail soup.

  27. strictlybazinga

I will dip pickled ginger in soy sauce. I enjoy it the salt and acidity just go well together.
