Tried the Jean Marc Burgaud Beaujolais Morgon Cote du Py 2023 which received 99 points from James Suckling. The ratings from JS are usually inflated, but I figured a 99 pointer would at least be a very nice wine, which this Morgon was. This has definitely been the best Beaujolais that I've tried in my limited experience with the region.

The nose was aromatic with violets, cranberry, forest floor, and the classic Beaujolais bubblegum note. On the palate the cranberry was accompanied by flavors of cherry, banana, leather, and baking spices. The wine refreshingly acidic, light, and velvety on the palate.

Overall, I thought this was very nice but it did not live up to the 99 point score for me. The texture and complexity definitely adds points, but the finish was average and the acid seemed to take over at times.

I think this would fit better around 93 points, but regardless it is a fantastic value at $25. I will probably go grab a couple more.

For UK residents, the 2023 can be had from the wine society for £17.50 by the look of it.

Fwiw, i see most critics putting this at more like 90-93, not sure what suckling was smoking

  2. What up with all the beaujolais poppin up ??? Very nicee!! Cheers mate
I rather have less bubblegum notes from maceration carbonique. Like foillard. Try if you haven’t.

I’ve bought Burgaud in the past, but haven’t enjoyed their wines as much as other producers like Lapierre, J.P. Brun or Daniel Bouland.

Sucking is a sliding scale. The higher the score the more you have to take off to get a reasonable one. E.g. a JS 91 is probably an 88. A JS 95 is probably a 91. Etc.

They have a Morgon that is one of my favorites

I know nothing about wines, but 99 on the pt score must be relative to the price range of the wine being consumed and scored? I see you winenozzles crone on about $1,002892,95743.00 bottles and do calculus to determine its tannin to nose ratio.

Colour looks darker than some Beaujolais I’m used to. Was it bold?

Why not? Cause scores mean fuck all that’s why not.

Well, you hit every WSET tasting note for Beaujolais… so good, i guess?
