It’s all pretty random to be honest. That‘s why I no longer take those hottest pepper records seriously. I’ve had ghost peppers that were less hot than an average habanero. I’ve had serrano peppers that made me feel like I just swallowed acid.

There’s so much natural variation between peppers even from the same plant it’s crazy.

I guess it depends on where the plant is located and making sure that you actually have more than two same plants beside each other. I have seen pictures of the same plants where they are growing together. Vs mixed in with others. I had one reaper plant, one ghost plant and a habanero plant beside each other and some bells and jalapeños beside them and towards the end of the season the reaper tasted less hotter. It may be in the soil.

I felt same disappointment. They’re hot but I expected more

I made hummus over the weekend with two cans of chick peas and 2 Reapers, 1 Ghost and 7 habs. The hummus I made last year with just 8 habs was hotter.

Maybe this is a controversial opinion but I don’t believe there’s really a genetic difference in heat when you get into the super hots.

Most of the heat is variable based on environmental factors.

I guess we never know what we are going to get. lol -depends on water, soil, heat, and the environment in general.
