Shake Shack is serving its iconic burgers with a new twist.

The New York-based fast food joint is “bringing the decadent, elevated flavors of French Onion Soup” with a fall-ready menu “that reimagines comfort food in a way that only Shake Shack can.”

In addition to the French Onion Soup-inspired burgers, Shake Shack is also introducing a brand-new side option on popular demand: onion rings, featuring “a crispy, beer-battered take on the classic side,” and is also bringing back the fan-favorite Coffee Shake ahead of National Coffee Day.

“With our French Onion menu, we set out to capture the depth of the classic soup,” Shake Shack executive chef and VP of Culinary Innovation John Karangis said in a statement. “We built flavor in layers, from slow-cooked caramelized onions and roasted garlic to melted Gruyère and crispy sweet onions – bringing this rich, indulgent soup to life in our favorite way: a delicious burger.”

Senior manager of culinary innovation Nick Wuest told USA TODAY at an exclusive tasting last week the French Onion Soup menu was almost two years in the making as the team experimented with several types of cheese, onions and layering techniques.

“We looked at all different ways of doing French onion,” Wuest said, joking “We made more pots of French onion soup than we knew what to do with.”

“Just (like) in any kitchen, there’s going to be a ton of people just walking around (saying) that’s really good, or that needs salt, or that would be awesome on this plate that I’m working on,”

Wuest noted that the team put together at least five iterations of the menu before the final one was finalized.

“That’s where all of our experience comes in handy. Of years in the industry, working in, like, quick-service restaurants, diners, fine dining restaurants, and catering companies,” Wuest said, adding “it’s our collective experience as chefs in the industry. There’s a bit of everything we all like in it because all our feedback comes first from the culinary team.”
