I’m doing a pulled pork and I just put the ambient probe through the hole for the regular thermometer.
It’s not locked in place since the metal clip didn’t hold it, but I’ll figure it out later if this works as expected.

The dome temp is typically higher than the ambient probe inserted near the meat in my experience

I know this is just one data point and contrary to what many are saying, but I did a chicken cook a few weeks back and put the RFX on the grate above the conveggtor, and it was within ~5 degrees of the dome thermometer the entire cook.
In fact, I’m firing up the egg today and will do it again to check.

This is fine. Just keep the thermometer in the same spot all the time and adjust your cook time/temps to what works best. The temperature is going to vary all over the place depending on fuel placement and many other things. I’ve started hanging my probe from the top of the dome so it’s roughly between the ceramic roof and the top of whatever I’m cooking.

I have done this as well, but I’ve found once heat soaked it usually 5-10 above grate temp on my xl with all stainless racks and convector plate

I never like using the grate temp when using the ATC, I found it varies too much as the fire moves around the box.
I also prefer just always using the dome temp, but I clip my probe to the stock egg probe from the inside

Interesting idea. How’d it work out?
