There’s this odd pattern: the best Bordeaux (and Burgundy) vintages so often end in 0 or 5 β€” 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2020…

This year was tough with heat and hydric stress, but on the sorting table the fruit looks excellent (that’s Marine in the photo, hand-checking every bunch at ChΓ’teau Canon Chaigneau in Lalande de Pomerol).

What do you think β€” is the β€œ0 and 5” rule real, and is there and reason? Or just a coincidence we like to believe in?

Based on my visit there in August I am of the belief that this may not be as good as previous XXX5 vintages. Although I prefer right bank and Merlot dominant blends most vintages, Paulliac and Saint Julien looked the most promising when I was there. Seemed like the Cab was doing better in areas with large gravel. But it’s largely speculation at this point that it will be a left bank Vintage.

Best of luck to you all! I can’t wait to taste everything at premier. Fingers crossed for a good year!
