Shake Shack is adding the deeply savory taste of French onion soup to its new seasonal burger lineup and officially debuting a highly requested new side — onion rings — to the menu for the first time.

As the calendar flips closer to fall, Shake Shack’s executive chef and vice president of culinary innovation John Karangis and his team have developed a delicious new slate of burgers inspired by the classic comfort dish, along with new sauces, sides and the return of a beloved shake flavor.

“The star of the show for us would be the [French Onion Soup Burger] — it’s made with a potato bun, seared beef, delicious Gruyere cheese, and caramelized onions that have a lot of the beefy, brothy flavors that you’d get in a crock of French onion soup,” Karangis said. “To add a little more to the celebration of onion and textural contrast, we took our crispy onions, and top it with that. The sauce that holds it all together is a garlic aioli that has some parmesan cheese and a little bit of lemon.”

In addition to the French Onion Soup Burger, the new French onion flare extends to two other new sandwiches: the French Onion ‘Shroom Burger, a crispy, fried portobello mushroom that’s filled with melted Muenster and cheddar cheeses, topped with caramelized onions and roasted garlic parmesan aioli on a toasted potato bun; and the French Onion Shack Stack, a quarter-pound 100% Angus beef patty topped with Gruyere cheese, a ‘Shroom Burger, caramelized onions and roasted garlic parmesan aioli on a toasted potato bun.

The company has also launched its first-ever Onion Rings. The new beer-battered onion rings “are made with Spanish onions, the same onions that we use in our caramelized onions for our burger,” Karangis said.
