Heat, drought, and forest fires have caused significant damage to the famous French vineyards. According to preliminary estimates, wine production in the country will fall below the five-year average in 2025, as reported by agronews.ua.

The new forecast for wine production is 37.4 million hectoliters. Compared to August calculations, it has worsened by more than 5 million hectoliters (42.5 million).

The figure will be slightly higher than in 2024 when adverse weather conditions also affected the harvest, but 13% below the five-year average. Among the main reasons are extreme heat and August drought.

In addition, the southwest of France suffered from the largest fire in the last 70 years, which destroyed over 17,000 hectares of vineyards and other agricultural lands.

Natural disasters have hit French winemakers against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump’s introduction of a 15% import tariff on goods shipped to the States last month.

Overall, climate change caused a drop in global wine production to the lowest level in the last 60 years in 2024.
