Just a glimpse of what other regions outside champagne have to offer. A rarity made of 100% merlot.
This is from Penedès wine region, know by its Cava, and other spaklings now getting lot of focus on Corpinnat and less on Classic Penedès (the first appellation for sparklings created outside cava).
This one is from a small family-run winery, Mas Comtal, which produces sparklings inside Classic Penedès appellation.
Mas Comtal 20 aniversari
Brut nature rosé 2014
100 months on lees
100% Merlot
Around 40€
It showcases the typical long ageing notes, but the red fruits are so faint that blind tasted would be hard to tell this is a rosé. Mostly toasted bread and brioche, honey and white fruits jam. When just poured, hints of pyrazines are more noticeable, but moments later they disapear.
On palate has very good acidity reminding of apple (probably not undergone malolactic) and mild and elegant bubbles, the toasted flavors are everywhere, and has a long and mineral finish.
A rarity worth a try!
