This is only after like cook 5. Is this normal, or did I totally screw these trying to clean them in between cooks? I bought some replacements but trying to avoid doing this again.

Just some casual pitting from corrosion looks like. Not to worry I’ve been cleaning and burning the same grate for almost 10 years.

Try lightly coating the grates with some oil before the cook. Makes them easier to clean afterwards.
