Do qualifications help with being hired?

Basically I've never worked as a barista but have always wanted to and now I'm taking the jump towards it! I know a lot of places require a year of experience prior but I don't have any. I have years of other customer service experience so it's just the barista skills I lack. I hope this makes sense and I appreciate any responses!
