I'm sure it's happened to everybody here at least once… you're getting ready to prepare a delicious oniony dish, when you slice it open and find mold inside!
What would you do here? Just cut away the bad parts? Toss the whole thing?
anybody got a trick for when picking out onions to know if they're moldy?

You can spot some signs on the outside sometimes, like spotting near the top of the onion, and softness if you give it a squeeze. Depending on how extensive it is I might cut out surface sections, but that looks too deep. There’s going to be mold growing in parts that aren’t obviously visible so you shouldn’t trust one that extensively rotted
I’ve never seen an onion (or cheese) moldy enough to give up on. Just cut off the yuck and cruise on, baby~
I’d cry throwing it in the trash
I don’t fuck with unknown mold. I’d toss it and clean the knife, get a fresh onion, and then pour one out for the fallen friend.
There is literally another onion right behind it?
Sucks for sure🧅
It’s just free penicillin, cut around it

NOOOOOooooooooo!
That’s mold? I thought soil got in-between the layers somehow. Whenever I encounter that I wash it off and use it. 😬
Yeeeeea I cut around the nasty and still eat the good stuff after a rinse.
When picking onions, put your thumb and forefinger on the crown and root and pinch. You want it to be firm with little to no give. You can test this even through a bag.
I typically cut out brown/yucky pieces but it looks like this has spread deep into the layers, some of the outer pieces might be ok, but I’d personally let it go. I’m sorry friend
I never have a “last” onion. When I have two left, I buy more for this reason.
Bruh it’s not Halloween yet 😭😱💀
I just cut it off. No wasting good onion parts round here
My mycologist friend said that the visible mold is the end of the growth process, like fruit on a tree. At this point the mycelium has penetrated the whole thing. I would toss all of it.
