After nearly 80 years, the German Wine Institute opens the election of the German Wine Queen for men for the first time. The competition will henceforth be called ‘Election of the German Wine Majesty’. This was confirmed by Ernst Büscher, DWI spokesperson, at ProWein in Düsseldorf to the wein.plus editorial team.

Two men will compete in the voting on September 26 in Neustadt an der Weinstraße. Should one of them win, he will hold the title of German Wine King. Instead of a crown, he will receive a chain of office. In September 2024, Levin McKenzie was elected Rheinhessen Wine King, marking the beginning of a new era. In November, Felix Grün from St. Goar followed as the Wine King of the Middle Rhine.

The decision at the national level was preceded by a long and heated debate about tradition and modernization. Just last summer, Ernst Büscher said: ‘We are aware of the tradition and want to preserve it, but we are open to contemporary adjustments.’ However, impulses for renaming the competition must come from the wine-growing regions themselves.

The election, in which representatives of the 13 German wine-growing regions compete, remains demanding: Expertise, quick-wittedness, and a blind tasting will determine the winner. The current Wine Queen is Charlotte Weihl from the Palatinate. Whether a man will take over the office for the first time in 2025 will be decided by a jury together with the audience.
