Went down to Detroit this past weekend to hang out with a few wine people and got absolutely spoiled.

These are the wines I managed to get pictures of the individual bottles but we definitely tasted everything.

2018 Henri Boillot Puligny 1er Cru Monopole "Clos de la Mouchere", Beaune, Burgundy– Unfortunately this bottle was just too young, and was showing suuper tight. Still, there was lemon, some lime, salinity, some iodine, and hazelnut. Fresh and crisp.

2005 Simon Bize Savigny-Les-Beaune 1er Cru "Aux Vergelesses", Beaune, Burgundy– Showing extremely well, lots of tart cherry, pomegranate, hints of spice, steak juice and even a slight graphite note. Fantastic Burgundy I'd happily buy again.

2019 Champagne Marc Herbrart "Special club"– Super fresh but still with lots of lees notes, this had apple, white peach, a hint of sourdough, oyster shell, and weirdly, a slight licorice/anise note. Excellent wine and my first special club Champagne.

2023 FX Pichler Gruner Veltliner "Loibner", Wachau, Austria– A little on the young side, this has green apple, lime, wet stones, white pepper, and a chicken stock umami characteristic. Needs time to develop but should be fantastic.

2022 Julian Haart Rielsing Kabinett "JJ", Mosel Valley, Germany– My first ever Julian Haart, the grapes come from Goldtropfchen and Falkenberg, this was easily one of the white WOTN contenders, loads of ripe peach, ripe apple, ripe clementine, lemon and lime juice, white flowers, petrol, crushed stones, and a lovely acidity.

2021 Yvon Metras Beaujolais, Beaujolais– A truly wild experience. Tart cranberry, underripe watermelon, underripe strawberry, higher acidity, and surprisingly not super funky, but definitely super natty. Not the style I typically go for in a wine, but impressive none the less.

2022 Guy Breton Morgon "P'tit Max", Beaujolais– Corked

2016 Domaine Dugat-Py Gevrey Chambertin, Cote de Nuits– Showing fantastically well. Deep tart and black cherry, ripe black raspberry, mushroom, potting soil, super integrated tannins and a really enjoyable acidity. Great Gevrey, and an enjoyable experience with Dugat-Py.

2007 E. Guigal Cote-Rotie "La Landonne", Northern Rhone– My second ever "LaLa", and one of my longest-standing Bucket List wines. Plum, blackcurrant, redcurrant, strawberry, leather, smoke, smoked beef/beef jerky, Asian 5 spice, white pepper, cinnamon, crushed stones, Turkish coffee, and so many more. Unsurprisingly WOTN.

2011 Louis-Benjamin Dagueneau "Les Jardins de Babylone" Moelleux, Jurancon– A lesser-known Dagueneau made from Petit Manseng, this had grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, passion fruit, melon, pineapple, honey, the tiniest hint of caramel, white flowers and more.

There are a few bottles I didn't manage to get individual photos of, so if you are curious about the Ricci Curbastro Franciacorta, Leflaive Macon, Girardin Meursault Perrieres, Billecart Rose, Mas de Daumas Gassac Blanc, Littorai Pinot, Failla Pinot, or Donnhoff Auslese, just let me know!

P.S. Don't sleep on Littorai!

  1. Did your friends already have these bottles, or did you pick some up while in Detroit? I live in Michigan, so am always curious about good wine shops.

That’s a great lineup of juice right there.
