Haven’t had liver at home since I was a kid until today. Did anyone else grow up eating liver?

We had it all the time when a kid hard to find The Black Eyed Pea used to have it

There is nothing wrong with it, it’s highly nutritious. It’s more of a mind set that makes people go that sounds gross and therefore they assume that they taste gross. Personally I grew up eating kidneys rather than liver though.

  3. Liver and onions fairly regularly. Would not touch the stuff now, with the exception of a little chopped liver.

I grew up loving it. Then one day at random we had it and I absolutely couldn’t stomach it. I have never been able to get past it again.

  5. My mother regularly cooked liver. Not a favorite, but I did not mind eating it. However my wife detests liver so no liver for the last 48 years.

My folks tried to get me to eat it but I honestly couldn’t stand the stuff…still hate it.

Veal livers pretty alright. Beef livers a little tough on the iron taste but I didn’t like it till I was in my late 20s. Turns out I still don’t like liver but it makes other things taste really good. It’s like if meat was ketchup. You wouldn’t drink ketchup but take a bite with some taters and bacon and it’s Just so good.

My mom (God rest her soul) never met a piece of beef she’s didn’t intend to turn into shoe leather. Her liver and onions were (was?) worse than being water boarded. She mean well and did make many other meals I came to love.

  9. Liver and onions. Oxtail soup, beef kidneys and cow tongue. I grew up on a farm. I could never figure out why we had to eat all that crap. It’s a wonder I’m not a vegetarian.

I love liver, as a kid I was meh about it, but now? Can’t get enough of it. I have to stop myself from buying it sometimes because it’s heavy on vitamins, and I personally would eat it everyday without care.

It’s best to soak in milk and salt to draw out some gaminess. Same thing with gizzards.

Liver and heart.👍. On the farm nothing went to waste. Deer also. Still on the farm just mostly timber.

Liver and onions was a staple for me in the 70s and early 80s.

Growing up in WI, I didn’t care for the occasional liver and onions. It was cooked too dry. Liverwurst I did like. As I got older and tried properly prepared liver and onions, I had a better appreciation for it. While in Japan a few years ago in Hyogo prefecture, which is known for their cow production, especially in becoming Kobe beef, I had the opportunity to try raw liver sashimi, kind of like carpaccio, and it was unbelievable.

First time I had it, I made it for myself

South Louisiana… hell yeah! 71 and now in Kentucky… hell yeah!

  17. Fried chicken livers from KFC were a delicacy we only got rarely. We didn’t have much money but we loved them. Never hear about them these days.

No but alcohol ate my liver until I quit drinking

I’ve given beef liver plenty of shots, and it’s just not for me. Maybe I haven’t had the right preparation, yet.

I love bird liver, though. And aside from duck and chicken livers, I ate plenty of fried gizzards, and that was before I started school.

No, but I eat those elk and liver crisps. Pretty solid.

  21. I grew up refusing to eat liver. It stinks its got a horrible texture and it tastes like crap

I did. I actually like it. My parents would just pan-fry it with some onions. I like to take it, dredge it in a light coating of flour, sear it in a pan with onion and pepper, or onion and mushroom, and then make a quick pan sauce with some butter and a bit of red wine.

Only duck and pig liver. Chicken liver is tolerable, won’t eat cow liver again.

  24. I just bought some calf livers last week, never had/madr it before. My GF says she loves it and is going to cook it for me. Looking forward to trying it and I love gizzards and chicken livers so we shall see…

  25. Had calf liver for dinner tonight! With onions (of course(, yellow squash and broccoli

  26. Yup…chicken, pigs and on occasion veal liver…love it.
You can simmer it on onion, especislly chicken or just fry it and add minced garlic later…mmmm

I eat all the usable parts from my ducks and rabbits. I love the liver, usually with onions on toast for breakfast.

Had it monthly as a kid. As an adult, no, because i can’t sell it at home. I liked it best well done with a nice seared crust.

Yeah, my mom used to cook liver & onions pretty often. I was one of the only kids I knew who actually liked liver. My mom was a fantastic cook & baker. The lady had skills, God rest her soul.

Besides the wonderful liver and onion variations, and such, here’s a dish my dad made when I was growing up (he still does),

Chunk the liver into approx thumb size pieces, just not too small,

Infuse flavor from several slices of ginger into cold oil in a wok and bring up to temp until ginger is lightly golden, remove

Get that oil nice and hot, add your liver chunks and stir fry lightly, don’t overlook the liver! Just barely get a cook on it then add some sliced shiitake mushroom, stir fry, then add diced onion, ginger slices from before, minced garlic, salt and pepper (white or black to preference), stir, add oyster sauce, stir and coat everything, then add some boiling water, enough to make a bit of gravy, how much is up to you, taste and adjust seasonings, then add a corn starch slurry to thicken it all up, turn off the heat, then stir in some frozen peas that have been just rinsed under the tap and a small hint of sesame oil, serve on some nice hot rice, and optionally garnish with some scallion, and enjoy,

This was is probably my favorite way to enjoy beef liver, you can also make this dish by subbing ground beef for the liver too for equally delicious results! The key is to not overlook the liver, have everything ready to go when you start cooking, it’s a very fast dish

Stir fry liver is my fave but I love all variations
