2025 Global Report on Food Crises – September Update
Famine unfolded in Gaza and parts of Sudan, with almost 1.4 million people facing catastrophic hunger in 6 countries/territories.
16 September 2025, ROME – The September Update of the 2025 Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC), warns that conflict-driven hunger has reached catastrophic levels in multiple countries and territories. Famine is confirmed in the Gaza Strip and parts of the Sudan, and a Risk of Famine is identifiedin areas of South Sudan.
Around 1.4 million people face catastrophic levels (Integrated Food Security Phase Classification/Cadre Harmonisé Phase 5) of acute food insecurity in six countries/territories – primarily in the Gaza Strip and the Sudan, followed by South Sudan, Yemen, Haiti and Mali.
Humanitarian agencies stress that only an immediate ceasefire and unhindered, large-scale aid can avert further mass death.
Other key findings include:
Conflict, economic shocks and weather extremes, underpinned by structural fragilities, continue to drive food and nutrition crises in 2025.
Nutrition crises worsen, driven by persistent high levels of acute food insecurity, limited essential services, poor health, and reduced assistance due to conflict, displacement, and funding cuts.
The Sudan remains the world’s largest internal displacement crisis with 10 million internally displaced people. In Gaza, 737 000 people were newly displaced between March and July 2025.
Substantial reductions in official development assistance and humanitarian aid is deepening food and nutrition crises in 2025.
As a result of funding constraints, humanitarian assistance operations reduced targets from 100 million to 76 million people, or 25 percent of those identified in 2025 GRFC as urgently needing food and livelihood assistance. The largest reductions were recorded in Chad, Venezuela, Mozambique and Somalia.
The 2025 GRFC – September Update underscores that famine is not inevitable if the international community acts decisively. Conflict resolution, sustained humanitarian access, and restored funding are essential to save millions of lives.
* Note: The September Update draws on data available as of 22 August 2025, covering 41 of the 53 countries and territories identified in the 2025 GRFC .
