CHARLESTON — Two new peninsula restaurants from successful local operators have set opening dates.
Each will bring Indian and Italian food, respectively, to the Cannonborough-Elliottborough neighborhood of downtown when they debut over the next few weeks.
Rivayet, from the owners who brought Mount Pleasant Spice Palette, will serve food from Southern and Northern India when it opens Sept. 18. The new restaurant, located in the 210 Rutledge Ave. space previously occupied by Makan, will serve lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday.
Owner Sujith Varghese told The Post and Courier in June that the strong local response to Spice Palette emboldened him to expand. He described Rivayet as an upscale restaurant that would speak to his roots in Kerala, India.
That starts with the restaurant’s interior, which was renovated to evoke a “coastal-meets-modern aesthetic with natural textures, warm tones and Indian-inspired accents,” according to a press release.
The food, featuring a blend of seafood prepared with traditional spices, vegetarian options and modern takes on classics, will match the “inviting and elevated” setting.
“Rivayat means ‘tradition,’ and that’s at the heart of everything we do,” Varghese said. “We’re honoring the past while creating something that feels exciting for today’s Charleston diner.”

Less than 500 feet from Rivayat, another highly anticipated restaurant will make its debut a few weeks later.
