We are big campers and I have been experimenting with making sourdough in a dutch oven over the campfire with very little success 🤣 I use Amy's simple sourdough recipe (link will be attached). Any ideas?

You need to wait until the coals are lower or pull them back from the dutch oven, put a few on top of the lid and wait an hour.
    You’ll figure it out.
It just takes fewer coals than you think.

Ring of coal around the pot and coals shoveled on top. That’s how they did it in the olden days

Bro that looks like a pork shoulder with teriyaki glaze lol how tf did you get it to look like that

  6. Have you tried making flatbreads? They’re much better suited to this. Kudos for trying to make a loaf in a campfire though.

I’m impressed you tried- I try new things all the time. Even things that don’t turn out- you learn from and give you a jumping off point for the next time. Good luck 🍀

I have a lodge camp Dutch oven, it has legs and works with charcoal. I make sourdough with it.

I would not be using the enameled cast iron for this purpose personally, I’d go for a raw cast iron, that is better prepared to take on the heat of the coals, which would need to be placed on top and all around the Dutch like others have said. Still look like it was edible though!!!!! Very cool!

  10. Oh boy I cannot let my friends that I camp with see this or they will never stop asking me to do this when we camp next lol

I enjoy cooking in a dutch while camping and have always wanted to try this, but I’ve always chickened out. Good on you for giving it a shot!

Maybe try heating the Dutch oven and then removing from the fire. Then add back after like 10 minutes and keep alternating. Fluctuate the heat a bit so you dont get so much burn. Possibly even going around the edge of the fire while rotating the dutch oven to try to keep it even. Im sure a wireless thermometer exists that you could stick under the lid or something to help monitor the ehat so you dont lose too much heat. Just need to make its able to handle the high heats before adding it.

    [I did this 4yrs ago,](https://www.reddit.com/r/Sourdough/s/gnmJ7dr6YT)

It was a sandwich loaf vs a boule, but turned out great. As someone else mentioned – wait until the fire dies down, and make sure you add coals to the lid. We used charcoal briquettes, but even just coals from the fire would be fine.

gonna assume the heat is way too high?
