The east side’s Garibaldina Society was transformed into a holiday dinner for 300 on Dec. 10 as vegan food company Sunday Supper and charity Support + Feed, founded by Billie Eilish’s mom Maggie Baird, hosted a festive celebration that honored the Italian venue’s century-plus roots in Los Angeles.

Outfitted with red and white checkered tablecloths, the inviting space had all the trappings of an Italian feast, including the delectable smell of garlic and tomato sauce and classic songs of the old country performed live.

The event was hosted by actor and entrepreneur Daniella Monet and featured a special appearance by Baird who was on hand to accept a generous financial donation for Support + Feed, whose aim is to promote plant-based eating as a more equitable and climate-aware form of nutrition. Since launching during the COVID pandemic three years ago, Support + Feed has expanded to 41 cities in the U.S. and internationally, thanks in large part to alliances made with more than 80 boots-on-the-ground community groups.

Sunday Supper proved to be the perfect pairing for such an initiative. Founded by Florian Radke and Richard Klein, its offerings — hearty lasagnas, raviolis and a soon-to-be launched line of mozzarella sticks called ‘Mozza Fritto’ — elicited all of the red sauce goodness of a dinner at nonna’s house, a comment made by many in attendance who marveled at the gooey goodness of the entrees.

“I wanted to create meals that … feel decadent, a meal that leaves everyone satisfied,” said Klein. “That was the inspiration for my first plant-based lasagnas. My friends loved them so much and encouraged me to sell them. So, almost on a dare, I put up a website to sell them, and they took off. Since then, we’ve expanded to other Italian foods beyond lasagnas, and are in retailers nationwide, but that core inspiration is behind every new item.”

Among the VIP guests in attendance were Jane’s Addiction’s Perry Farrell and influencers like Jenn Zhang, Stuart Brazell, Paul Zahn and Nikki Martin. Los Angeles magazine was also represented with copies of the December issue displayed throughout the banquet hall and adjoining bars.

“Support + Feed has been honored to be at music festivals such as Lollapalooza, Something it the Water with Pharrell Williams and working on world tours with my daughter Billie and Paramore to feed so many people in the cities of those tours,” said Baird from the podium. The aim of these stops, she added, are “to address food equity and food insecurity; to educate and inform people about the importance for their health and for the planet of eating more plant-based food.”

As for future dinners? Klein says the brand hopes to “create a series of in-person Sunday Supper events like the one we just held at the Garibaldina Society in Los Angeles where we bring together all types of people for an evening of amazing plant-based Italian food, dancing and togetherness.”

You can find Sunday Supper products at such specialty grocers as Erewhon, Plum Market, Central Market, Fresh Direct and Fresh Market. Read more about Maggie Baird‘s efforts in Los Angeles magazine’s December issue, on newsstands now and at Barnes & Noble stores across the country.
