The basically used too little coffee, grind size wasn't optimized, just completely winging it. They even liked the coffee they drank. The bar for good coffee is really low I guess for most people. Anyone else recognizing this?

  1. trust me, a lot of people spend much more money than they have any right to on espresso gear. very few of them know how to truly properly use the stuff they buy, and a large number of them operate under the notion of “expensive gear = good coffee”.

that said, if they’re happy with the coffee and the money they have spent, good for them 🤷‍♀️ show them some stuff to help if you can, but a “happy if youre happy” works for me.

Wow more money than sense I guess. I wonder how common this is. Did you give him a tutorial?

Your friend has way more credibility than you do if he can afford that set up

My next door neighbor has a higher end Bambino and once complained to my wife that it makes horrible coffee, maybe I could come over and look at it.

No need to – my wife quickly realized that they never let the machine come to pressure before they used it. Just turned it on and went. Once they let it pressurized, it was better.

I thought people who have no clue buy mostly Nespresso or other capsule machine, or superautomatics. This must be a victim of a sales man.

  6. Personally I think a good workflow and a $400 machine will get you much further than not knowing what you are doing with a $4000 machine most days. 😃

ECM Mechanika? That is $3000 of turbo-charged goodness. There may be a UN commission you can alert; this problem is too big for local authorities.

    >they even liked the coffee they drank.

So what’s the issue then? Isn’t that the ultimate goal here? If they like it, then that’s the key.

I’d so want to be gracious to my host. But I also would be tempted to ask some “leading questions”: e.g. hey, I’ve always thought about increasing my dosage and read some positive things about that–do you know anything about that/what do you think/(wanna try now)? 😉

This is how I feel about people with a grand piano at home that they don’t know how to play 😆

That’s just sad. Like a Porsche collecting dust.

Did you show your friend the “correct” way to use the machine (and did they prefer the output?)

As other folks said, if they like it then I guess it’s fine but ideally improving their workflow with best practices will help them get the most out of their setup.

Some Hoffman videos may get them interested as well so they can explore on their own!

Well what he lacks in espresso making skills he clearly makes up for in research abilities. He picked some real winners! Now you get to come in clutch and get this man operational!

Aaah, rich people <3. Would love to have that machine, but I do have the same grinder.

  15. livestrong2109

Perfect grinder and solid machine. Maybe teach them how to dial in the grinder and how to use a tamper

  16. All the gear, no idea.

In a way it doesn’t surprise me that someone could be perfectly happy with poorly pulled shots, they might have never known any better. Unfortunately there’s plenty of cafes that consistently do a terrible job, and there’s plenty of self proclaimed coffee lovers who have never experienced anything else.

So you are telling me that this thing is for making those tiny cups of coffee? I just bought it because I like shiny things.

  18. Nyelz_Pizdec

“they even liked the coffee” sounds like a w to me.

How dare that troglodyte enjoy their coffee without optimizing the bean size! The nerve!!

  20. noodleexchange

We have both a coffee air-roaster and a Vitamix that were fobbed off on us because someone simply didn’t use them.
    Not complaining.

It’s like driving BMW and don’t know how to drive lol

did you mean to put this on mildly infuriating. Lmao. Luxury and wealth is really wasted on those with no taste. Its a shame.

  23. I physically recoiled at the second pic yuck 🤮🤢

I love my Mechanika. Ive got the flow control valve added to mine.

  25. cardman1224

Someone should get him a la Pavoni lever. That would be fun to watch.

  26. RunningWithHounds

Seems a little bizarre that someone would make that kind of investment and now know how to at least have a decent idea as to how to use it. Did you help them out? You probably could have blown their minds with 5 minutes of dialing in and a little weighing.

I mean I thought my Nespresso was good once upon a time. It’s all good until you eat the apple.

  28. CenlTheFennel

Just think, a Nespresso would give him better quality for his skill
