French pastry shop MK Cannelle is set to open its sixth metro Detroit location at 156 N. Center St. in Northville at 10:30 a.m. Friday.

The patisserie, founded by Matti Knio, is known for its beautiful French pastries such as cakes and tarts, a variety of croissants and crusty baguettes. MK Cannelle locations also serve coffee, sandwiches and salads.

Knio got his start while working in a bakery, according to mckcannelle.com. An opportunity to work on a cocoa plantation took him to Africa’s Ivory Coast. Several years later, he returned to Paris and began working under master pastry chefs and attended Academies de Versailles. He interned at other establishments before moving to the U.S. and becoming head pastry chef at Michigan’s Ritz Carlton.

Knio launched Cannelle Café in 2003, followed by the Golden Wheat Bakehouse in 2005, which provides many of Knio’s breads, buns, croissants and other products to metro Detroit businesses.

MK Cannelle’s other locations are in Ann Arbor, Birmingham, Detroit, Farmington and Keego Harbor. A Rochester location is listed as “coming soon” at mkcannelle.com.
