First time cooking steak. It looks about 1-1.5ish inch thick. I have an oven and a pan and that is about it. I’ve got the basic seasoning like salt, pepper, and butter. Can someone point me towards a guide?

They mislabeled that. It’s a NY Strip cut from the loin primal. It’s still a good steak. Salt and pepper, high heat, and butter for finishing.

Take the steak out of the fridge come up closer to room temp. Pat it dry and then season with salt and pepper. Heat up the pan. Check the pan when it’s hot enough by putting a drop of water on the pan. It should evaporate quickly, and that tells you that the pan is hot enough. If the water droplet doesn’t evaporate, then it’s not hot enough. When the pan is hot, add some oil into the pan. Then place the steak into the hot oiled pan. You should hear sizzling. Let it cook for 3-4 min and during that time DO NOT MOVE IT. Then flip and let it cook for another 3-4 min. DO NOT MOVE IT. Then take it off the pan and on to a plate and let it rest. If you cut into it immediately after cooking the delicious juices will run out of the meat and we do not want that. Rest the steak for another 3-4 min and then dig in.

  3. Stare at it angrily until it cooks itself.

You will find many ways to cook steak on this sub so I wanted to post something silly. What kind of pans do you have? Do you have a meat thermometer?

First come to terms with the fact that you have a strip steak.

Make the pan so hot you’re scared to stand next to it.

    Dry steak
    Salt steak
Butter in pan. Steak in pan. Flip in 90 seconds.
    Remove in 90 seconds.
    Let it rest 5 minutes.

Salt for AT LEAST 45 min. If its overnight bring out from the fridge an hour prior to cooking.

Heat a cast iron pan to 325-350, add some oil, wait 30 seconds, pat steak dry, place in pan, flip every 30 seconds until 120 internally, remove from pan and add pepper, rest 2 minutes and eat.

Alternatively heat in 225 oven until 130 internal, rest 10 min, heat cast iron or stainless pan to 475-550, sear 30 seconds each side, sear 30 seconds again per side if desired, add pepper, serve immediately

This is the best way but not the easiest
