Nottingham has long been home to a range of fabulous restaurants, many of which offer cuisines from across the world. There’s one country that you could argue set the blueprint for food as we know it – France. And its style is not too dissimilar to our own.
The country birthed fine dining as we know it and has produced some of the greatest chefs on the planet – but many of the delicacies have made their way across the channel in the past century or so. But why travel to France for good food, when you have these amazing French restaurants on your doorstep?
We have compiled a list of three of the city’s “best” French restaurants according to Three Best Rated, which ranks the best restaurants across different categories in different areas.
They are spread over different areas of Nottingham with different specialities in each. Whether you’re looking for a delicious coq au vin or a tagine, these three city restaurants could have everything you need:
Le Mistral
This bistro and wine shop is a lovely place to taste the most delicious French food and drink. Open since 2008, its menu includes moules marinière, chicken and bacon fricassée and coq au vin.
The restaurant states: “Everything is locally sourced and freshly cooked to order. Le Mistral also offers vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. You can also hire private event space at Le Mistral for weddings, meetings, or parties.”
They also offer a lunch menu, an express lunch and a regularly changing list of blackboard specials. Being only a short car or bus ride from the city centre, Le Mistral is a great place to experience delicious French food and can be found at 575 Manfield Road, Sherwood.

This modern, all-day French brasserie serves some of the best French dishes in the area. Its menu includes a French breakfast, breakfast cassoulet, and viennoiseries boards.
The West Bridgford restaurant has a 4.1/5-star rating on TripAdvisor from more than 800 reviews. One reviewer, Andrew C, wrote: “Great to report that, after quite a time-gap for us, Cote has lost none of its previous excellence. Notwithstanding the challenges the restaurant faced in coronavirus and after, it is right back at the top of the tree again – well done.
“In my view, this is the only truly authentic French brasserie available, with a superb menu, very fairly priced food and drink, with attentive, friendly and, clearly, well-trained staff. For an hour or so, I was back in Normandy, it was that good.”
The restaurant can be found at 4-6 Central Avenue, West Bridgford.
Bistrot Pierre
Nestled in the heart of the city centre, this welcoming restaurant has a variety of dishes served across breakfast, lunch and dinner. This includes their specialities – chicken printanier, boeuf bourguignon, pan-fried salmon fillet and Moroccan sweet potato and red pepper tagine.
Open since 1994, this French restaurant offers many different dishes across its dozens of sites across the UK, as well as a host of regular food vouchers and deals.

“I can’t rate this place high enough as it’s always lovely. I’ve never had a bad meal here and if you’re visiting Nottingham or post theatre just book yourself in and pop in and see if there is tables.”
Bistrot Pierre can be found at 13-17 Milton Street in Nottingham city centre.
