I mean, they have links to more information, what are you asking for? Seafood watch is pretty reliable and up to date with their research and recommendations as far as consumer access guidelines go.
Looks like it’s about sustainable farming of fish? Looks like the website has loads of explanations on all the points.

Looks like their objections are to fishing methods – use of trawling or purse seines (also: sprats from Ireland & Scotland). I don’t know how to assess it, but it’s a reputable rating entity, out of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I also don’t know why Morocco would be better, as I can’t imagine anyone is catching sardines without a net, but maybe it’s also related to the health of the fisheries – perhaps the same equipment endangers more bycatch in some places than in others.
With the reputation that Spanish and Portuguese tinned seafood has right now, it isn’t surprising to see that it has been classed as unsustainable.
Ironically, in the UK at the moment it is basically open season for octopus, as there are so many of them it is starting to become a problem for fishermen. UK caught octopus, mussels, and jack mackerel are great choices for sustainable seafood at the moment.

That website is very informative. I think more people should use it. They have a magazine as well that informs you about what is best to eat in your local areas and why or why not

Interesting about Japan. Aren’t they the ones that get dolphins in a cove and then slaughter them? I’m thinking their fishing methods aren’t so pure.

I’m all for ethical fishing and supporting good companies and practices.
But this kind of shit should not be left to the consumer. I can’t be an expert on everything I buy and every company that makes it. That’s what governments should be doing is making bad practices illegal or disincentivized.

Great read! Phew – my favorite – Wild Planet sardines in EVOO are sustainably sourced.

It would be nice to get a list of brands that are sustainably caught. I’ve never tried sardines before but this subreddit has me intrigued.
