I made sugar cookies to practice for my sisters day of the dead babyshower.

They came out so ugly . . . Any tips?
My frosting in some colors was a bit thin too.

I don’t think they’re ugly at all! They’re not the most “professional” sure but that doesn’t mean they aren’t cute! I wish I had tips and tricks to make them a bit cleaner but I don’t bake myself. Just wanted to comment so you’re less hard on yourself ❤️ these cookies are still very impressive, compared to driving to a store to buy cookies and not trying at all!

So smart to do a practice run! I love the colors – you nailed it there!

I would say the number 1 thing is your icing is too thin. Try thicker icing it can be more forgiving. If you’re also newer you could try something like decorating more simple designs for the shower and you could leave out cookies like this for ppl to decorate as a shower activity?

Not bad!! Watch some videos on layering. If your icing is too thin, add in more power sugar. Flood consistency, then wet on wet detail consistency, then detail consistency. I watched so many videos on YouTube to get better! My first attempt looked much like this and now it’s much better

My biggest tip is to just keep practicing and be patient with yourself! It has taken me about 4 years to feel like I know what I’m doing and I still feel like I learn with every set I make.

Watch some videos, join some cookie groups and just keep going! You’ll learn what works best for you in time.

  6. Agree to thicken icing.

Try some where you don’t do a flooded white base — instead, follow the lines suggested by the stamp imprints with more delicate dots, flourishes, floral petals etc. You’ll end up with something striking with the color palette you’ve chosen and it may look a little cleaner!

I just had to comment that I love your Papyrus cookies mixed in, so charming.

I’m a super beginner whose cookies don’t look as finessed as these so I’m hardly in a place to give advice. My only thought was if you wanted them to look more consistent, trying to get the eye size the same might help, even if the patterns change.

Edit: eyes size the same as the color stamps and between other cookies, I mean

Can’t help with the technique but regarding design you could look up “Sugar skulls day of the dead” to grab inspiration on the face decorations! Since they are made from real sugar and icing the designs are less intricate than illustrations of Catrinas.
