Antipasto plural antipisty is the traditional first course of a formal Italian meal. The name literally means before the meal from the Latin anti meaning before and past as meaning meal. It’s meant to stimulate the appetite and get you ready for the courses to follow. Think of it as the Italian equivalent of an appetizer. But it’s often more varied and elaborate than what you might find in other cuisines. A typical pasta platter can include a wide range of bite-sized foods such as a cured meats like procedto, salami, and mortadella. Cheeses, which can be hard, soft, or fresh and vary by region. Marinated or pickled vegetables like olives, artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers or mushrooms. Breast yet or other types of crustini small toasted bread slices.
