Had the driest brisket I've ever had. I did some research to find out the best spot on Lockhart. Wanted to try Barbs but it opens only on weekends, so we decided to go to Kreuz instead of Smitty's. Think we made the wrong choice. The ribs were dry as well, the only thing good were the sides (mc and cheese and sweet corn).

I went to Smitty’s over a decade ago. John Fullilove was still alive and in charge. The brisket was pretty good but the sausage was life changing. Sadly, Smitty’s isn’t what it was back then.

I think it can be hit or miss at some of these fallen greats. Smitty’s was the most disappointing barbecue I’ve ever had, and I won’t go back. I’ve always had good luck at Kreuz, but that brisket does look terrible.

I could tell that just from the pictures. Sad.

Went there a month ago for the first time in years. Sad to say the brisket was dry and subpar. Pork chops and sausage were solid though.

many of the old school place have really fallen off

Man makes my meal at Hard Eight look epic. Sorry you wasted your money and time.

That unfortunate. Ever since longtime pitmaster Roy Perez suffered a stroke earlier this year, things have been…different. Smitty’s sausages were always there best item. Of the big-3 of Lockhart, Black’s has remained the most consistent across the meats.

I last went to Kreuz about a decade ago and it wasn’t this bad but wasn’t nearly as good as any random place in Austin. I absolutely would have taken that back to the counter and demanded my money back if they served me this. Sad how much some of these old school joints are just riding on history

Not the best bbq by any means but man do you have to have respect for these old school paces. I was in awe when I walked into the pit rooms at Kreuz and Smittys. I love any place that has a live fire raging right by the cash register.

Kreuz is the OG. I love the sides and sausage is good. Have you been to Barbs B Q? Neat place in Lockhart. Love that green spaghetti.

That looks sad. I wouldn’t serve that especially with social media nowadays.

That’s poop from a butt on some jerky.

Brisket there is always terrible. Sausage is good but brisket is bad

You go to Kreuz’s for the clod and the pork chop. And especially to atmosphere/experience. Maybe even the sausage (personally not my favorite).

    But never for the brisket.

The original kreuz was top notch in the 90s. Best sausage links

If someone served me brisket that looked like this they would take it right back and I would leave.
