I’m finally diving into Burgundy. There’s so many different villages and vineyards within those villages which produce such different wine… it’s a pretty intimidating place to try to learn about.
I decided to start with one village… I picked Chambolle – Musigny because after reading about the different villages in Rajat Parr’s “The Sommelier’s Atlas of Taste” the Chambolle style sounded right up my alley… “ethereal, graceful, and the very embodiment of finesse that ushers drinkers to burgundy.”
Prior to opening this bottle I had about 5 different villages level wines from various producers… all of which I absolutely loved.
Opened this 2 hours before pouring. The smell was insane, a perfumed red fruit with rose pedals and earth/forest floor. On the palate much of the same, still super young at 12 years… red crunchy fruit, extremely delicate but structured mouthfeel, and a clean lingering finish. My wife and I drank it too fast. I need more Barthod for the cellar.

First serious bottle is right! This is my favorite wine from Ghislane, ( I LOVE her white, but can’t get it often) The minerality, power and finesse of this wine changed the way I feel about red burgundy years ago and I love to revisit it often, and happy to see others enjoying it too!
Burgundy is amazing full stop. The things I wish someone had explained to me sooner were “Producer, Producer, Producer” and that you can’t ever fully judge a wine by the vintage or the vineyard.
Everywhere else, vintage and vineyard can take you pretty far, but in Burgundy it’s all about who is making the wine.

Her “Veroilles” is one of my favorite wines in the world! She owns all the 1er classified grapes in the vineyard!
the crazy thing to me when starting is how much “serious” Burgundy varies, huge spectrum of floral/perfume vs rustic grand crus. have fun.

That is serious wine. Ghislaine is a master, and her style is perfect for Chambolle fruit.
One of my favorite producers period. Excellent choice
