I have never had store bought ones, but I learned that it is quite easy to make crispy onions in the air fryer, and I am obsessed. A little bit time consuming because you have to keep opening up the air fryer and giving them a stir, but relatively hands off apart from that. Mine were to top up a pumpkin miso pasta, but I think they will compliment so many soups, curries (particularly Indian ones), biryanis, and so much more. They are crispy, a bit chewy, and so delicious. Instructions below!

  1. Thinly julienne an onion, aiming for roughly 3mm width. I would recommend doing this process one onion at a time, unless you have a huge air fryer. The ones used here are Spanish onions, although I imagine sweet onions would work so well. Would be even better if you have a mandolin
  2. Preheat your air fryer to 300F (or 148C)
  3. Drizzle some olive oil and sprinkle some salt over top, massage it in with your hands, making sure to separate all the little individual onion strips
  4. "Fry" onions at 300F for 10 mins. If you're using a silicone liner, I would take them out, give them a stir, and put in for another 10 mins.
  5. Take out and stir. Reduce air fryer temp to 240F (116C), then "fry" for another 5 minutes.
  6. Repeat step 5 until they reach your preferred crispiness. Make sure to stir / shake them every 5 mins to ensure even cooking

Why the like? Makes cleaning easier? That’s the reason why I stopped using my air fryer. The grease is a pain to clean out
