Feeling chipper with kipper

Trying kipper snacks for the first time. Meaty, firm, a little dry. I didn't realize these were packed in water until I opened them, and will try the oil version next time. The smoke taste was prominent without being overwhelming.

I had these with a little cream cheese, horseradish, fresh ground pepper, lemon juice, and hot sauce on multigrain flatbread crackers. Delicious combo, barring the crackers, which tasted stale out of a new package, and got soggy and fell apart instantly from the lemon juice. I guess a more substantial cracker would work better.

My food smell-sensitive spouse immediately sniffed it out 20 minutes after I had taken the evidence to the outdoor trashcan. 😭 He just put the stove fan on, though, and didn't complain. He never mentioned the two previous sardines cans, so maybe the herring is stronger smelling? I never really notice.
