Air drying these and they’re looking funky. Do these look rotten and should I toss the whole pepper?

Or salvage what you can from it. But I don’t take that risk personally

I’d be inclined to ditch those, they’re going to give you the shits either way but the rotten way isn’t worth the risk 🤣

I’ve eaten pods like this and had the worst cramps ever…not cuz of heat or capsaicin…but b/c i had cleary eaten mold/rotten food. Unfortunately i find my success rate at air drying rather hit or miss; win some lose some. I toss pods when they look like this

Yeah I vote rotten or turning. Usually when I dry peppers, I’ll use the oven set super low for awhile. They end up drying pretty well.

If you air dry, it’s gotta be REALLY sunny and REALLY dry. You cut slits in the peppers so they can dry out better. But using the oven on really love heat is the easiest if you don’t have a dehydrator.

    Sadly these are rotten.

Air drying without at least cutting them open first?

If they look like that, I toss them, that’s just me. Cut the top portion off and look inside, if they don’t look rotten, they’re probably okay.

Dehydrators are super cheap and well worth the investment.

  9. I don’t mess with it. If I have any doubts about whether the pepper is good or not, I toss it. But I am also overwhelmed with peppers, haha.

Just get a dehydrator their cheap and you can find them even cheaper at a resale shop. In 36 to 48 hrs I have perfectly preserved pepper pods.

Use an air fryer. I use dehydrate on that thing and it does take hours but even with superhots they dont mess the place up with fumes and you can cook all kinds of $ht with it.

Toss them. Fyi a decent dehydrator is like $50 on Amazon. Best money I’ve spent so far for this season.

Air drying can allow mold to grow, yes id throw those away. Get a food dehydrator and it’ll be easier to dry peppers out. Good luck

I know I sound like a grandma but I would cut off the top and look inside. If they are completely dried out (knock them against each other, they should sound like one of those kids plastic rattles) and you see no signs of rot, I’d keep the good parts.

Either way, unless you live in an hot and dry place you should avoid air drying or you will have new losses. The drying process simply takes too long and fully ripe peppers can start to spoil in the days it takes.

Place a cut or pierce them (so steam can escape) and if you don’t have a food dehydrator then put them at 70C in your oven and leave the door open just a crack (you can put a wooden cooking spoon in the crack). Over night they will be completely dried out. If you don’t cut them it will take considerably longer and you’ll just waste a bunch of electricity for nothing.

I get this exact thing airdrying whole peppers.

Best results are cutting them in halves/quarters and putting them on a plate on top of my gas boiler

Do you live in the desert? If you don’t then don’t air dry
